Three Musicals Sweep Tony Design Nominations

The 2008 Tony Award nominations—announced on Tuesday, May 13—include a few new twists, including the first-ever nominations for Best Sound Design of A Play and Best Sound Design Of A Musical, a true landmark in the field of sound design.

Three musicals swept the design categories with a nomination for sets, costumes, lighting, and sound. These include In The Heights, which leads the overall nominations with a total of 13, and the current revival of Sunday In The Park With George, which also marks the first time a projection designer was included with the set designer in the scenic category for a musical. The third musical to sweep the nominations is the Lincoln Center Theatre revival of South Pacific.
